There is a growing movement within the world-wide Type 1 diabetes (T1D) community to stop delayed and missed diagnoses of T1D, which often leads to diabetic ketoacidosis. In this spirit, UP Rising Against DKA was created. "UP Rising Against DKA" stands for United Parents Rising Against Diabetic Ketoacidosis and is a Global Coalition Effort for DKA awareness.
Although begun as a group of like-minded "parents" in May 2015, we recognize that people of all ages can be impacted by DKA. UP Rising Against DKA is quickly evolving into a coalition of groups and organizations, as well as parents, members of the medical community, and other individuals–all with a very focused, common goal.

A grassroots effort, UP Rising Against DKA was created to further the Mission + Vision of Test One Drop and to UNITE individuals, advocacy groups, and organizations under the common goal of spreading awareness and changing Type 1 diabetes diagnosis protocols. Membership in the UP Rising Against DKA Coalition requires that individuals, groups, and organizations support the Mission + Vision Statements of Test One Drop, in addition to other advocacy work they might be involved with.

Our reputation of treating each family with respect has allowed us to become the chosen representative of many families who have lost loved ones or suffered due to the current lack of awareness about Type 1 diabetes and DKA. If you are unfamiliar with the seriousness of DKA at T1D onset, we invite you to visit our Test One Drop Facebook Page for a small sample of these stories. We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has come forward, whether publicly or privately, to make this effort possible.
Finally, we are excited about the path UP Rising is on and anticipate great changes and success with our mission. Please note that along with a year filled with great victories, we have been in the process of restructuring UP Rising Against DKA based on what we have learned through the challenges that accompanied our initial growth. If you have been waiting for an update about the UP Rising effort, your status, or a reply from either UP Rising or Test One Drop, we appreciate your patience and will be with you soon. (Please see update below.)
Let's UNITE against the lack of education and awareness that allows unnecessary life-threatening events, permanent disabilities, and deaths to continue. Please keep inviting others who are passionate for this cause to join the UP Rising.

FEATURED UP RISING
AGAINST DKA COALITION MEMBER
"50 years ago I was diagnosed in a DKA coma with T1D as a toddler. I have worked for the last 35 years to improve quality of life for both my own daughter (T1D) and others who have the disease. It is unconscionable that DKA is still happening and that people are dying at alarming rates in spite of the ability of current technology to detect and diagnose in the early stages. My organization (DiabetesActivist.com) has aligned with TestOneDrop.org and others as a part of the UP Rising Against DKA to reverse this problem through education and awareness to the public and providers of medical care." –Betsy Ray, Founder/CEO Diabetes Activist |

Pictured above: In November 2015, Betsy Ray launched our National Diabetes Awareness Month campaign, with the epicenter in Colorado. If you saw the blue buildings in Downtown Denver and homes lit in blue around the city that was us. People gathered at Civic Center Park on the eve of World Diabetes Day, November 14, for our event to honor those we have lost in the past to lack of awareness about the disease. The park amphitheater was beautifully lit in blue, symbolic of Diabetes.
UP RISING ON FACEBOOK UPDATE

UP Rising Against DKA has a closed Facebook group. Although it began as a place for members to discuss DKA, tell their stories and share ideas–due to time constraints–the UP Rising FB group will no longer be interactive in nature. Rather, it will be used as a bulletin board for UP Rising administrators to post updates and relevant information for those who wish to join us in the battle against DKA at T1D onset. You may send inquiries, information, content proposals, ideas, and concerns via the form on our TestOneDrop.org Contact Us tab or via email with the subject line: UP Rising.
To those who have questioned the "closed" status of the UP Rising Facebook group, this decision was made from the beginning to protect those in the T1D community who trust us with their diagnosis stories, as well as photos of their loved ones. Not everyone wants to go public with their stories or identities–a right which we have always respected and will continue to respect.
We value honesty and integrity. Accordingly, we have a zero tolerance policy for rudeness, disrespect, dishonesty, gossip, slander, spam, intellectual property infringements, etc. If you feel you have been removed, banned, or blocked from one of our pages in error, please contact us; however, please understand that our firm rules and high standards are another method of protecting the families who allow us to carry the stories of their loved ones as beacons to light the way.
